CES 2014: Huawei Announces Mate2 4G Smartphone

Chinese phone manufacturer Huawei has unveiled the Ascend Mate2, its latest 4G/LTE enabled smartphone at the CES 2014 consumer electronics show in Las Vegas.

Following the release of its predecessor at CES 2013, the Mate2 features a powerful quad-core Snapdragon MSM8928 1.6 GHz processor to light up its 6.1 inch IPS screen. It also contains a powerful 4050 mAh battery which Huawei says will last for two and a half days from a single charge. Alternatively, users could watch six movies, listen to up to 100 hours of music, or enjoy half a day’s continuous web surfing.

The device is equipped with LTE Cat4 connectivity, meaning it can offer download speeds of up to 150 Mbps, so content such as movies can be downloaded quickly. It also features 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, with the opportunity of microSD expansion up to 32GB.

Bigger size, better camera

Huawei has put a lot of focus on the device’s camera capability: the Mate2 comes with both a 13MP rear and 5MP front-facing camera to allow HD video capture.

Measuring only 9.5mm thick, the Mate2 also features Huawei’s Emotion 2.0 user interface, which allows single-hand operation, with the special Gloves Mode ensuring users can operate their device even in the depths of winter.

“With Huawei Ascend Mate2 4G, we are bringing the benefits and convenience of superfast connectivity to people everywhere,” said Colin Giles, Executive Vice President, Huawei Consumer Business Group.

“Huawei Ascend Mate2 4G is power-packed for the mobile generation who want non-stop entertainment on the go, such as the ability to snap and download photo albums in seconds or use their smartphone as their mobile office, “ said Giles.

Interestingly, Huawei confirmed that the Mate2 will be available in the US, although no dates were confirmed, suggesting that the company has improved relations with the American government following their falling out last year, which led them to pull all their products from the country.
