BT has given its fibre service a speed boost, promising up to 160Mbps on its Infinity broadband offering.
Upload speed has also been increased from 15Mbps to 20Mbps, BT announced today, saying that Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) connections in 25 exchange areas in the UK would benefit from the boost.
Highams Park, Bradwell Abbey, Leytonstone, Ilford, Ashford, Forest Hill, Chester, York, St. Austell, Truro and Exeter will be the first exchange areas where customers will be able to buy into the new superfast speeds.
“We have set the standard again by boosting our top speed available to customers. We are seeing strong interest in our fibre broadband offerings and we now have more than 700,000 customers,” said Pete Oliver, commercial director of BT’s consumer division.
“160Mbps now beats anything offered by our major rivals for speed and today’s substantial speed boost comes at no extra charge, as the price remains the same.”
BT has been involved in a speed war with its rivals, in particular with Virgin. Both companies have pledged to increase speeds for current customers. Earlier this month, Virgin said it had started upgrading its 100Mbps broadband customers to 120Mbps as part of its speed doubling initiative.

I keep seeing articles like this regarding fibre optic broadband but I haven't been able to get a word out of BT regarding likely time of availability for more than a year now and I live in St Austell, which is supposed to be at the forefront of development. It's ridiculous.
