BlackBerry 10 Apps Increase To 100,000 Ahead Of US Launch

There are now more than 100,000 BlackBerry 10 applications ahead of the BlackBerry Z10’s US launch on 22 March.

The latest version of BlackBerry’s mobile operating system was released in the UK last month with 70,000 apps, with 30,000 new applications added since then.

A number of popular apps such as Kindle, OpenTable and the Wall Street Journal are available from today, with the likes of CNN, eBay, eMusic, Skype and Viber added the catalogue in the near future.

100,000 BlackBerry 10 apps

“The response to the BlackBerry 10 platform and applications has been outstanding. Customers are thrilled with the applications already available, and the catalogue just keeps growing, now with more than 100,000 apps,” said Martyn Mallick, Vice President, Global Alliances at BlackBerry. “Top brands and application providers are joining us every day and are seeing the benefits of being early supporters of the new platform.”

BlackBerry has been keen to get as much support from developers as possible on board, conscious of the fact that anyone wanting to make the jump from Android or iOS will want to be able to use the same apps as they have become accustomed to.

The Apple App Store currently has more than 775,000 applications, while Google Play has in excess of 700,000.

TechWeekEurope’s review of the BlackBerry Z10 noted that many key applications were simply not present at the time of writing, but the addition of key apps like Skype will go some way to addressing this.

BlackBerry 10 is seen as vital to the future of the recently renamed-BlackBerry, which has seen its share of the smartphone market slide in recent years as a result of increased competition from the likes of Apple and Samsung.
