Argos has become the latest retailer to launch its own tablet, the Argos MyTablet, which at £99.99 is £20 cheaper than the recently-released Tesco Hudl.
The seven-inch Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 tablet promises all the functionality of a fully-fledged tablet, including web browsing, music, video and social networks, along with enhanced parental controls.
It boasts a 1024 x 600 LCD display and is powered by a 1.6GHz dual core processor and 8GB of storage that can be expanded by up to 32GB through the provided MicroSD card slot. The MyTablet also has a 2 megapixel rear camera and a 0.3 megapixel front facing camera for Skype conversations.
Released in time for the Christmas shopping season, the MyTablet will be available in pink and silver varieties and can only be bought from Argos’ website or from any one of its UK and Ireland locations.
Argos, which recently agreed a click and collect deal with eBay, hopes the low price will entice first-time tablet buyers and encourage people to use its stores for their Christmas shopping.
“Millions of people bought a tablet last year but there’s still around 75 per cent of the UK population who do not yet own one. We know that tablets will feature heavily on Christmas lists again this year,” says John Walden, Managing Director of Argos. “Customers have never had such a good quality tablet at such an affordable price. At just £99.99 the Argos MyTablet is highly competitive with a great specification, and fits neatly in the range of tablets we have on offer.”
Tesco announced the Hudl last month at a price of £119, with further discounts available for Tesco Clubcard holders. The retailer hopes to promote its online shopping services through the tablets, although it will hope to avoid the fate of the critically-panned tablet from clothing retailer Next that debuted in 2010.
