Apple Reports App Store Sales of $10 Billion During 2013

Apple has today announced a record-breaking year for its App Store, reporting sales of $10 billion (£6.1bn) over the last twelve months.

December was a particularly good month, with $1 billion (£0.6bn)worth of sales coming in that month alone thanks to App Store customers downloading almost three billion apps, making it the most successful month in the portal’s history.

“We’d like to thank our customers for making 2013 the best year ever for the App Store,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet software and services. “The lineup of apps for the holiday season was astonishing and we look forward to seeing what developers create in 2014.”

The App Store offers over one million apps for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices to users in 155 countries around the world, with more than 500,000 apps available for the iPad alone. The release of Apple’s latest iOS 7 operating system back in September added over 200 new features and APIs to developers’ toolbags and gave older versions a facelift.

Apple stated that its developers had now earned over $15billion through the App Store, and listed Candy Crush Saga, Puzzles & Dragons, Minecraft, QuizUp and Clumsy Ninja as some of the biggest hits of the year, as more and more users turn to mobile devices for their gaming needs.
