Apple Offers Free Hard Drive Replacements For Faulty iMac

Apple is offering free hard drive replacements to owners of some 27-inch iMacs after discovering a “small number” of 3TB hard drives might fail under unspecified “certain conditions.”

The systems in question were sold between December 2012 and September 2013 and Apple says it is contacting those affected if it has their contact details, but is requesting that anyone who thinks they may be impacted to contact an Apple Store, authorised retailer or technical support.

iMac hard drive recall

Replacements will be offered to customers, even if their machine is out of warranty, until 19 December 2015 or until three years from the original date of sale – whichever is longer. If anyone has repaired or replaced their hard drive already, then they may be refunded

“Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) will replace affected hard drives free of charge,” said the company. “Apple is contacting affected iMac owners who provided a valid email address during the product registration process to let them know about this program. If you have not been contacted, but think you have a 3TB hard drive, you can enter your serial number [on the official Apple website] to see if it’s part of this program.”

It is unclear what conditions cause the hard drive failure, how many customers have been affected already and how many systems in total are covered by the programme. Apple did not disclose to TechWeekEurope any further details.

Earlier this month, Apple recalled Beats Pill XL speakers amid overheating fears. Owners were offered a full refund for the device of £215, which the company said caused a “fire safety risk” in some “rare cases.”
