Amazon Promotes Andy Jassy To CEO Of Amazon Web Services

The head of Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been given the title of CEO as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos congratulates the cloud business unit on reaching $2.5 billion in revenue in just one quarter.

Andy Jassy until now has held the title of senior vice president of Amazon Web Services, but at ten years old, AWS has become the shareholder darling of Amazon and the market leader in public cloud.

“Thank you and congrats to my friends and colleagues Jeff and Andy – very well deserved!” tweeted Bezos.

Amazon also promoted Amazon’s consumer business executive Jeff Wilke to chief executive officer. Wilke has been senior vice president since 2012.

Growth

Amazon boss Jeff Bezos

“This is not a reorganization but rather a recognition of the roles they’ve played for a while. Kudos to Andy and Jeff,” said Amazon.

Amazon Web Services is on track for $10 billion (£7bn) in annual revenue, with its most recent fourth quarter revenue growing 69 percent year-over-year.

In a blog post by Amazon following a letter to shareholders from Jeff Bezos, Amazon said: “Marketplace, Prime and AWS are examples of bold bets at Amazon that worked, and they’ve become our three big pillars.

“And as we’ve grown as a company and those three big pillars have also grown, we’ve decided it makes sense to change the titles of the leaders of those businesses—Jeff Wilke and Andy Jassy—to CEO Worldwide Consumer and CEO Amazon Web Services.”
