Microsoft unwraps its new Office 2016 family as it looks to make teamwork easier than ever

Microsoft has officially revealed Office 2016, its latest suite of workplace programs which it says will take the stress out of working together.

With a major focus on collaboration and productivity and designed to work seamlessly alongside Windows 10, Office 2016 updates old favourites such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook with a range of new tools and services, whilst also introducing entirely new offerings as well.

This includes the adoption of real-time editing (pictured below), a smarter email service that learns what content is important to you, and search functions that provide you with contextual information around any inquiry you have.

“The way people work has changed dramatically, and that’s why Microsoft is focused on reinventing productivity and business processes for the mobile-first, cloud-first world,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

“These latest innovations take another big step forward in transforming Office from familiar set of individual productivity apps to a connected set of apps and service designed for modern working, collaboration and teamwork.”

The new Office 2016 apps are available now in 40 languages, and require Windows 7 or later to install. They are available today as a one-time purchase for both PCs and Mac devices, and Office 365 subscribers can also choose to download the new Office 2016 apps as part of their subscription. Automatic updates will begin rolling out to consumer and small business subscribers next month, and to commercial customers early next year.

Office 365 subscribers can also access up-to-date, fully installed apps for use across their devices, combined with a continually evolving set of consumer and commercial services, such as OneDrive online storage, Skype for Business, Delve, Yammer and enterprise-grade security features.
