IBM Offers Single-User Bluemix For Added Cloud Security

IBM has launched a single-user version of Bluemix, its platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offering, allowing users to build cloud-based software that uses sensitive data while meeting compliance and regulatory requirements, the company said.

Bluemix Dedicated, available now via IBM’s SoftLayer cloud business, is intended to address user concerns over data security and confidentiality, by deploying in a single-tenant environment in an IBM cloud centre of the user’s choice.

Dedicated hardware

“IBM is adding another on-ramp to the cloud for developers to move quickly and innovate, but do so in a model that maintains the necessary levels of security and control,” said Steve Robinson, general manager of IBM Cloud Platform Services.

The offering gives customers dedicated hardware and a direct network connection to their premises, and will initially offer a set of services including Cloudant database, data caching to improve performance, messaging, and runtimes that allow developers to choose their preferred coding language.

IBM said it is also offering a private API catalogue in the public version of Bluemix that will allow on-premises applications to securely utilise services based in IBM’s cloud.

Bluemix Garage comes to London

The company said it has added a London location to its Bluemix Garage network, which allows developers, product managers and designers to collaborate with IBM consultants. The new site is located at Level39, a technology accelerator in One Canada Square in Canary Wharf.

IBM also launched DevOps Innovation Services, which includes guidance and software tools intended to help companies reconfigure development operations to use fast-paced “devops” development techniques.

IBM has invested $7 billion (£4.4bn) in 17 cloud acquisitions since 2007, including the acquisition of SoftLayer last year. The cloud operation now offers more than 100 software services and has more than 30,000 clients.
