Google Launches ‘Password Alert’ Free Anti-Phishing Chrome Extension

Google has released a new extension for its Chrome browser that enhances security for Google accounts.

Dubbed Password Alert, the extension is downloaded through Chrome and attempts to protect user passwords and other personal info from hackers.

The anti-phishing tool stops users from re-using their Google password on other sites, as well as defends the user from sites pretending to be Google.

Google said: “Password Alert also tries to detect fake Google sign-in pages to alert you before you’ve typed in your password. To do so, Password Alert checks the HTML of each page you visit to see if it’s impersonating a Google sign-in page.”

The extension can be downloaded from the Google Chrome webstore, and is free of charge.

Google claims that if using Password Alert whilst signed into a Google account the extension does not send any data from the computer you are using, and if your Google for Word admin chooses to deploy Password Alert in your workplace, they will be the ones receiving alerts when the extension is triggered.

The search giant also said that the extension does not store keystrokes, but instead stores a secure thumbnail of your password which it compares against a thumbnail of your most recent keystrokes.
