Middle and high school students in Mississippi schools that used Math Nation during the 2021-22 school year achieved higher math proficiency and math growth scores than students in schools that did not use Math Nation, according to an independent study conducted by Mississippi State University (MSU).
The MSU study included all Mississippi middle and high schools that participate in the Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP) in mathematics. On average, schools utilizing Math Nation demonstrated 13% higher math proficiency and math growth on the MAAP, compared to their non-Math Nation peers. In addition, for students who scored in the lowest 25% on the previous year’s MAAP assessment, math growth was significantly higher for students in Math Nation schools.
Results also indicate that Math Nation is more effective at improving math growth for students who are Black or African American and in areas with higher poverty rates. In some cases, the effect sizes were above 1, indicating that Math Nation usage had a substantial effect on MAAP scores.
“This new efficacy study adds to multiple evaluations over the last decade, which show that usage of Math Nation is tied to improved student performance in math,” said Dr. Shawn Wigg, vice president of Math Nation curriculum at Accelerate Learning. “These results will be particularly useful for districts and schools looking for proven ways to improve math outcomes and help students overcome pandemic-related learning setbacks.”
In 2021-22, Math Nation was utilized in 86% of Mississippi’s 137 school districts. Math Nation is a dynamic online resource that helps students master middle and high school mathematics. It provides 24-hour access to high-quality instructional videos, workbooks, collaborative learning tools, and adaptive assessments and support.
