In recognition for the foundational “Configurable In-Memory Computing Engine” patent that powers EnCharge AI’s core technology, CEO Dr. Naveen Verma has received the 2024 Edison Patent Award in Computing Technology from the Research & Development Council of New Jersey, the highest recognition of innovation in the state. Dr. Verma accepted this award during a ceremony and reception on November 21, 2024, at Bell Works in Holmdel, NJ. An announcement video is available here.

Developed at Princeton University by EnCharge AI CEO and Princeton Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Dr. Naveen Verma and fellow researchers, this breakthrough in analog in-memory computing now forms a cornerstone of EnCharge AI’s transformative technology for advanced AI deployment from edge to cloud. The award-winning innovation overcomes the fundamental challenges that have limited analog computing’s practical use in AI applications for decades, enabling orders-of-magnitude efficiency improvements while maintaining the accuracy and programmability essential for complex AI workloads.

In his acceptance speech at the historic Bell Works facility, Dr. Verma emphasized the region’s pivotal role in technological innovation: “There really is a transformation happening here, especially as the challenges and problems that we face in society have become harder and harder. There is a spirit of taking those on because they’re hard problems,” he said. “When you mix that spirit together with something that is really uniquely New Jersey, a level of grit, then I think you get really interesting invention.”

The Research & Development Council selected winners through a rigorous evaluation process examining each patent’s significance, utility and socioeconomic value, novelty, and commercial impact. All winning patents required at least part of their technical and scientific work to be completed in New Jersey, reflecting the state’s continuing legacy as a hub for technological innovation.

This recognition comes at a crucial moment for AI. Current digital architectures face fundamental limitations in meeting the exponentially growing demands of AI at scale. Traditional computing approaches, which separate memory and processing, create significant bottlenecks in energy consumption and performance by requiring constant movement of massive data volumes. While these limitations have confined advanced AI to data centers, EnCharge AI is now commercializing this award-winning technology to bring sophisticated AI capabilities directly to the edge, enabling local processing where data is generated and used.
