DGS Unveils Strategy for Global Wireless Spectrum Sharing and Network Optimization

Digital Global Systems (DGS), a leader in the detection, identification, classification, and geolocation of radio frequency (RF) signals, today unveiled a strategy that leverages its patents in AI to tackle the global industry challenge of wireless spectrum scarcity.

As the number of deployed IoT devices grows and more enterprises become reliant on wireless services, including autonomous robots and vehicles, greater pressure is being placed on the RF spectrum. The assumptions used to plan and build networks and allocate shared spectrum will soon exhaust this finite and precious resource, creating network interference that will impact wireless service reliability for all users. With clear insight into these challenges, DGS identified the need to gain a real-time holistic view of spectrum usage early on. DGS calls this capability ‘AI-enabled RF Awareness,’ and it’s achieved through intelligent sensor software embedded within the RAN that continuously monitors the physical layer. Through this, network operators, enterprises, and other users can benefit from real-time analysis and actionable data that will allow them to prioritize service support dependent on their individual needs and goals for wireless networks.

Through a relentless pursuit of technological advancement, DGS is leveraging sensor software to set the standard for sustainable, advanced-level spectrum sharing and the creation and optimization of innovative radio access network (RAN) services. Using AI and advanced machine learning for the detection, classification, and geolocation of signals, DGS will advance the connectivity goals of network operators, infrastructure providers, mobile enterprise consumers, and other industry players worldwide. Leveraging the business insights of DGS Chairman and CEO Fernando Murias and the technical expertise of CTO Armando Montalvo, the company identified numerous market gaps. In 2013, it embarked on a patent application strategy that has supported the company’s leadership today. DGS has now been issued more than 225 patents in the USA, with 100 more pending, allowing industry stakeholders to access and dynamically use this crucial RF data.

AI-enabled RF awareness has enormous implications for all industry stakeholders. It can be used by spectrum access system (SAS) providers to characterize individual service requirements and enable true dynamic service coexistence and prioritization. Service-aware Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (SaDSS) will become ever more vital as interest in shared spectrum continues to grow worldwide, as it has in the U.S. for wireless shared spectrum. Network operators and SAS providers can detect interference from neighboring networks in real-time and mitigate the impact through automated adjustments. For example, by adjusting power levels or dynamically changing channels, the user can maintain vital support for new services and promote industry growth.
