Bonterra™, a social good software company creating technology for the greatest social impact, has released key insights on the results of this year’s GivingTuesday for nonprofit organizations utilizing their software solutions. Nearly $100 million was raised this year by Bonterra, an increase from the previous year, with over 300,000 donations processed over the course of the day.
“People clearly want to give — and they’re even more generous when technology makes it easy for them,” said Scott Brighton, CEO of Bonterra. “That’s our focus for this GivingTuesday and beyond: creating donor experiences that inspire generosity on a whole new level.”
As one of the most important days of the year for social good organizations (SGO), Bonterra’s data highlights how philanthropy continues to evolve in the digital era. Bonterra’s insights include:
- The average donation amount on GivingTuesday 2024 increased by 9% from 2023, increasing to $225.
- Returning donors comprised 62% of GivingTuesday donations this year via Bonterra’s solutions, with an average donation amount of $224.
- While new donors were a smaller percentage of GivingTuesday donations — 38% — they gave a larger average donation than returning donors. New donors had an average gift amount of $232.
- Digital giving methods continue to grow in popularity amongst donors. 62% of donors donated online with a credit card and 10% utilized a mobile wallet to donate on GivingTuesday.
“This year’s record-breaking donations and participation demonstrate the incredible power of collective action,” said Asha Curran, GivingTuesday’s Chief Executive Officer. “When millions unite with a shared purpose, we don’t just give what we can—we create real, tangible change. Each donation, each act of generosity, is a building block for community solutions that actually make a difference.”
Bonterra’s solutions played a large role in a highly successful GivingTuesday 2024. According to GivingTuesday Data Commons, a record-breaking $3.6 billion was donated across the United States on GivingTuesday 2024 by 18.5 million people, a 16% donation increase from the previous year.
Increased popularity in online giving comes after a record weekend of online transactions for Black Friday. Shoppers set a new record this Black Friday, spending $10.8 billion online—a rise of over 10% compared to last year’s totals, according to Adobe Analytics.
“It’s incredible to see such an impressive start to the 2024 giving season amongst our users,” said Ben Miller, SVP of Data Science & Analytics at Bonterra. “Donors were excited to come out and support the causes they cared about, and nonprofits across the United States connected with donors to bring about a successful day of generosity. Our team is hopeful to see these results ignite more giving through the end of the year and set our customers up for a prosperous 2025.”
Utilizing software solutions built for nonprofits to bring in more donations from new and returning donors on essential days like GivingTuesday is imperative to Bonterra’s mission: garnering over $550 billion more in global impact every year by 2033 by increasing giving to 3% of the U.S. GDP.
“Increasing charitable giving via software solutions on days when giving is top of mind is a crucial step in our mission,” added Brighton. “GivingTuesday will continue to be a significant driver for our customer’s fundraising efforts, and we are proud to play a part in ensuring social good organizations are getting more for their mission.”
