EE 4G Down In Parts Of UK After Data Centre Issues

EE customers in many parts of the UK have been unable to access 4G services for much of the afternoon.

The operator says an issue with one of its data centres is to blame and that service is being restored.

“Data services were affected for a small number of customers after one of our data centres experienced a power cut this afternoon caused by a third party,” an EE spokesperson told TechWeekEurope. “We immediately re-routed traffic to minimise disruption, and power was restored within two hours.

EE outage

“Service has largely been restored to the majority of people, but a very small number of customers may still have difficulty connecting to the network. Customers still experiencing connection issues should switch their device off and on, or enable and disable ‘Airplane Mode’ to resolve the issue. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

The issue does not appear to be localised and has affected users in London, Newcastle, Manchester, Glasgow and other parts of the UK who are greeted with a ‘PDP authentication’ error.

TechWeekEurope tested the EE 4G network in central London this afternoon and although the phone claimed to be connected to a cellular signal, only calls and texts were possible.

Last month, EE suffered an issue which prevented customers from making calls to landline numbers, while a “glitch” in March 2014 also caused some services to be unavailable.
