Microsoft WiFi To Offer Inclusive Wireless To Office 365 Subscribers

Microsoft has accidentally leaked details about the upcoming ‘Microsoft WiFi’ service, which will allow Office 365 subscribers and other selected users to access more than ten million Wi-Fi hotspots with a single log-in.

The information was spotted on a dedicated Microsoft WiFi website, which has since been pulled and replaced with a holding page. It has been suggested the new service is a rebrand of Skype WiFi, which provides access to more than two million hotspots, paid for with Skype Credit.

Microsoft will reportedly offer packages for both consumers and businesses, with employees of organisations running Office 365 for Enterprise granted access as part of their subscription. Skype Wi-Fi subscribers and other customers who have received ‘special’ offers will also be covered.

It is unclear whether the service will launch with Windows 10, which will be made available as a free update to all existing Windows users from 29 July, or at a later date.

“We are evaluating a new service, called Microsoft Wi-Fi that will bring hassle-free Wi-Fi to millions,” a company spokesperson told TechWeekEurope. “We look forward to sharing additional detail when available.”

The Microsoft WiFi app will apparently be available for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android, continuing the company’s recent cross-platform strategy, and providing an added incentive for individuals and enterprises to take out Office 365 subscriptions.

The move would bring Microsoft into competition with the likes of iPass, which provides curated Wi-Fi networks to business users. However iPass currently has 20 million hotspots – double the amount set to be offered by Microsoft.
