EE Refreshes 4G Mobile Wi-Fi Devices In Bid To Get More Things Connected

EE has updated its range of 4G Wi-Fi devices as part of its quest to get more things connected, not just smartphones, to its LTE network.

The mobile Wi-Fi devices create a 4G-powered ‘personal hotspot’ that can be used to connect laptops, tablets and phones via a wireless network – ideal for locations where there is no fixed broadband, or the network quality is of poor quality or too expensive.

The ‘4GEE WiFi’ unit has a new ‘curved design’, support for Cat 6 LTE and 802.11a/b/g/n/ac connectivity. Its 5,000 mAh battery lasts for 24 hours and also doubles as a portable charging bank. The unit has Qualcomm’s Fast Charge 2.0 technology so it can be rapidly replenished, too.

The smaller ‘4GEE WiFi Mini’, is as the name suggests, smaller, lacks the charging features and Cat 6 LTE support, and only supports WIFI 802.11b/g/n. Both are available on price plans starting at £11 and on a pay as you go basis.

“As leaders in the UK 4G WiFi market, we’re continually looking to launch the latest mobile broadband devices,” said Sharon Meadows, EE’s director of devices. “Our new 4GEE WiFi hotspots are designed for those who want a compact device that makes the very most from our award winning network when on the move.”

EE has more than 14 million 4G subscribers and has released a range of own brand devices in a bid to increase revenue. These have included tablets, smartphones, live streaming video cameras and in-car Wi-Fi units.

The BT-owned operator also has products aimed at businesses and the public sector, and has won a £1 billion contract to build a new LTE-powered Emergency Services Network (ESN).
