Businesses in Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster will be able to access broadband speeds of 1Gbps thanks to CityFibre’s fibre to the premise (FTTP) infrastructure.
A 110km network spanning South Yorkshire will allow service providers to deliver ultrafast broadband to organisations in the region.
“Organisations large and small now require reliable, fast, low latency internet services to compete and succeed in an ever changing digital world,” said Rob Hamlin, commercial director at CityFibre.
“We are opening up a new world class digital infrastructure in the region, which will provide internet services like never seen before. We look forward to our market launch and to connecting the first customers soon.”
“Having worked with CityFibre across the Leeds and Bradford network, we’re really looking forward to expanding our service offering across Yorkshire,” added Mark Cowgill, co-founder of Exa Networks.
“As a UK leader in providing internet services to the education sector, we understand the crucial importance of ultra-fast connectivity in our schools as well as our businesses and anticipate a huge demand for increased bandwidth in both the education and business communities of Sheffield.”
CityFibre is looking to establish itself as a serious competitor to BT Openreach and has networks in 40 towns and cities across the UK. It bought KCOM’s national fibre infrastructure for £90 million last year and a deal with rural FTTP provider Gigaclear has been struck.
It often builds networks for local councils who serve as an anchor tenant before building out to serve residential and business communities who can subscribe to 1Gbps broadband through third party partners.
During the first half of 2017, CityFibre claims it connected 3,702 new customers; an eightfold increase year-on-year.
