Alcatel-Lucent Releases New Compact Routers

Alcatel-Lucent on 28 Oct introduced two IP routers designed to provide smaller communities with” the same advanced mobile, residential and business services currently delivered in larger metropolitan areas. The new products … will extend the benefits of service routing further out into the network,” the company said in a news release.

The 7750 SR-c12 and 7750 SR-c4 servers “are powered by the FP2 chip set, Alcatel-Lucent’s … [own] silicon [that] delivers sophisticated and optimised network processing and traffic management at speeds up to 100G bps. Both also run under the same operating system as the entire Service Router family for seamless interworking, consistent service delivery and simplified operations,” Alcatel-Lucent said.

The smaller form-factor servers are “scaled to meet the requirements of smaller ‘points of presence’ in large service provider networks, and to address IP/MPLS [Multiprotocol Label Switching] network requirements for smaller-scale service providers and mission-critical verticals.”

“Alcatel-Lucent continues to build out and strengthen its IP portfolio with innovations such as the recently introduced [100G Ethernet] interface, targeted at massive bandwidth requirements, and now with our new high-performance platforms dimensioned for smaller points of presence,” Basil Alwan, president of Alcatel-Lucent’s IP activities, said in a statement. “Not only do the new Service Routers deliver outstanding flexibility in their ability to deliver a full range of Ethernet port speeds from 10M bps to 10G bps, but they’re also well suited to programs designed to extend broadband connectivity, which is a driver for economic development in all regions.”

The new routers “deliver up to 90G bps of forwarding capacity and can support edge routing interfaces speeds of up to [10G Ethernet] with sophisticated quality of service, a highly scalable control plane and native IPv6 support in hardware,” Alcatel-Lucent said.

An Alcatel-Lucent spokesperson declined to comment on the price of the servers.
