Huawei Takes Away The Leica, Keeps Dual Cameras For P9 Lite

Huawei has revealed a new edition of its flagship smartphone as it looks to target more budget-conscious consumers.

The Huawei P9 Lite takes many of the features from the company’s recently-announced P9 device, as it looks to gain more UK customers in the face of growing competition.

The all-metal device weighs in at just 147g and 7.5mm across, meaning it’ll slip into most bags and pockets with ease, and is available in a range of different colour schemes.

The P9 Lite features a 5.2in touchscreen, and inside, there’s a HiSilicon Kirin 650 octa-core processor, meaning it’s not as powerful as its bigger brothers, although this is backed up by 3GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, which can be boosted to 128GB via microSD.

Powering this is a 3,000mAh battery with intelligent power saving technology with intelligent power saving technology, with connection provided by micro USB, unlike the P9 and P9 Plus, which sport USB-C.

As for cameras, there are no Leica-branded lenses like on the premium Huawei devices, but the P9 Lite does still pack in a 13MP camera with dual LED flash and autofocus. This is twinned with an 8MP front camera which is able to produce full HD images, making it perfect for selfie fans, even in low light.

Unlocking is done via a fingerprint scanner on the rear, and there’s also NFC, Bluetooth and 4G connectivity, with software provided by Android 6.0 Marshmallow behind Huawei’s own EMUI 4.1 software.

The P9 Lite will be available in the UK from late May and can be purchased in black from EE, O2, Vodafone and Carphone Warehouse, costing £239 without a contract, as well as a range of pricing options that will be revealed later this month.

“With the P9 smartphone family, Huawei are offering users a superior smartphone experience. The latest edition to the family, the P9 Lite, with its lower price point, is no exception to this,” said Rhys Saunders, sales director, Huawei UK&I consumer BG.

“The phone has a premium and stylish look and feel, a high-resolution rear and front camera, as well as a powerful battery, making this a perfect companion for budding photographers on the go.”
