Android Lollipop Is Becoming Sweeter For Mobile Users

Google has revealed that user numbers for the adoption of its latest mobile operating system, Android Lollipop, are continuing to grow as more and more consumer update their devices.

In its latest Android Developers Dashboard, using data pulled from earlier this month, the company revealed that 21 percent of Android users were now running on either Lollipop 5.0 or 5.1, a significant rise from the 9.7 percent share recorded back in May.

Google has announced that the next edition of Android, named Marshmallow, will be released soon, and include features such as built-in fingerprint identification and a new way of handling application permissions.

Sweet deal

First announced in October 2014, Android 5.0 Lollipop offered a wide range of visual and interface improvements alongside a selection of hardware tweaks. It can be found in many of the latest flagship Android devices including the Sony Xperia Z5, LG G4 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

Despite this growth, however, it is the earlier versions of Android that still reign supreme in terms of user numbers.

Android KitKat still currently leads the way with 39.2 percent market share, ahead of Jelly Bean with 32.2 percent.

Older versions proved they were still holding strong, however, with Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread weighing in with 3.7 percent and 4.1 percent, respectively, and Froyo clinging on with 0.2 percent.

Google pulls the data from devices running the latest Google Play Store app, which is compatible with Android 2.2 and higher. Each snapshot of data represents all the devices that visited the Google Play Store in the prior seven days.
