Ever since the App Store opened its doors in July 2008, mobile applications have become a part of everyday life.

Downloadable software has been around for a long time, but smartphones, faster mobile and Wi-Fi connections, and digital marketplaces have allowed the app revolution to take place.

Apple’s early ‘there’s an app for that’ mantra is as true now as it was eight years ago, with mobile apps used to communicate, shop, bank, book holidays and entertain ourselves.

The sharing economy pioneered by the likes of Uber and Airbnb, freemium games generating billions in revenue and music streaming services like Spotify are all underpinned by this fundamental change in how we consume content and software.

The revolution extends to the business world too, with mobile versions of stalwarts like Microsoft Office and Outlook, custom applications and mobile device management (MDM) software.
