iOS 9 Goes Live But Apple watchOS 2 Is Delayed

iOS 9 is now available for compatible iPhone and iPad devices, but watchOS 2 – the first major update to the Apple Watch – will not be released today, due to an unspecified bug.

The update is available for free to the iPhone 4S or later, the iPad 2 or later and the iPad mini or later. It will also come pre-loaded on the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus announced last week.

iOS 9 improves standard applications and Siri, adds new enterprise features and provides enhanced multitasking support for newer iPads.

watchOS 2 delay

Apple Watch OS 2 was due to be released alongside iOS 9, but it has been pulled hours before the planned launch after the company discovered an issue serious enough to cause a delay.

“We have discovered a bug in development of watchOS 2 that is taking a bit longer to fix than we expected,” it told TechWeekEurope “We will not release watchOS 2 today but will shortly,” a spokesperson for Apple said in a statement.”

The news will be a blow to Apple Watch owners as watchOS 2 was set to introduce a range of new features to the wearable device, including support for native applications, FaceTime audio calls, and health and fitness applications, alongside a new nightstand mode and an activation lock which should improve security.

The delay is reminiscent of last year’s launch of iOS 8, when the Health app was pulled from the update at the last minute due to a HealthKit flaw.

The Apple Watch was released in the UK in April alongside 3,000 applications and was first revealed to the world last September. It is Apple’s first new product category since the iPad, and the first since the death of Steve Jobs. It is also the first device totally designed by Sir Jonathan Ive.
