Google Pulls Nexus 5 Sales

Google has announced it will no longer sell the Nexus 5 smartphone through its online store.

Users looking to buy the device from the Google Store are now greeted with a message that says “the Nexus 5 is no longer available for purchase” with a “Not Available button” displaying in the upper right corner.

Instead, the company looks to be focusing its attentions on the Nexus 6 device, which was announced last November.

A Google spokesperson told The Verge that “while some inventory of Nexus 5 still exists (with our retail and carrier partners), our focus is on the Nexus 6 at this time.”

Moving on

The move follows a report from December that Google had ceased production of the Nexus 5 (pictured left), with one company spokesman suggesting that potential buyers get them while they can because “once they are gone, they’re gone.”

The Nexus 5 was first released in November 2013, costing £299 at its launch. Developed in partnership with LG, the device looked to compete with the iPhone 5S, featuring a 5in touchscreen and Android 4.4 KitKat.

Last week, Google opened up a brand new online store for UK customers as part of a wider channel strategy to get its devices on to the high street. This included the company’s tie-up with Currys PCWorld to launch a specialist in-store Google zone at its Tottenham Court Road store in London which will allow customers to browse a range of Android-powered phones and tablets, Chromebook laptops and Chromecasts, as well as learning about how they all work together.
