Apple Watch OS 1.0.1 Fixes FREAK Bug, Improves Third Party App Support

Apple has released the first software update for the Apple Watch, improving performance and fixing several security issues – including FREAK.

iOS 8.2 fixed the FREAK encryption bug in March, but owners of the company’s new wearable have had to wait almost a month after launch to be covered.

In total, 12 security flaws are fixed in Apple Watch OS 1.0.1, including two memory corruption issues that could allow a malicious attacker to execute malicious code.

A number of kernel bugs are fixed, including an IPv6 issue, another that could allow an attacker to redirect traffic and one that could allow someone to escalate privileges. Apple has also updated the operating system’s certificate trust policy.

Other enhancements include improved performance for Siri and third party applications while the device’s health and fitness features are also given some attention. The Apple Watch will now measure stand activity, calculate calories for indoor cycling and rowing workouts and assess distance and pace for outdoor walk and run workouts.

There’s also support for new Emoji characters and additional languages, including Brazilian Portuguese, Danish, Dutch, Swedish, Russian, Thai, Turkish.

Owners have recently been warned that they could be a target for thieves due to the lack of a kill switch if the device is stolen. The launch of the Apple’s first wearable has not been without problems, most notably the revelation that some of its features do not work properly if the user’s wrists are tattooed.
