Vodafone Plans VoLTE And VoWi-Fi Launch This Summer

Vodafone customers will be able to make calls over a Wi-Fi of 4G connection this summer, improving the reliability and quality of voice conversations on the network.

The operator made its first call using Voice over LTE (VoLTE) this summer and says the technology means 4G users won’t suffer from slower download speeds when they pick up the phone, as is currently the case with calls over 2G and 3G.

Additionally, VoLTE also reduces the amount of time it takes to connect a call, with the promise of reaching other numbers instantly. Vodafone has been testing the technology internally and will hold a trial ahead of the commercial launch.

Vodafone VoLTE

Since launching in August 2013, Vodafone 4G has amassed 1.4 million customers and its network covers 50 percent of the UK population.

Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi) will make it easier for people in rural areas, buildings with poor indoor signal, or any other area where coverage is patchy to make phone calls by using an existing Wi-Fi connection. Users will not have to go through a specific application and the process should be the same as a call over a cellular network.

Compatible handsets and other details will be revealed closer to the rollout.

“Our Wi-Fi Calling service will ensure that our customers never miss a call,” said Jeroen Hoencamp, Vodafone CEO. “It is another important step towards our commitment to build the UK’s strongest converged network.”

Rivals EE and Three also hope VoWi-Fi and VoLTE can improve their services and attract more customers, while the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) suggesting that 80 operators in 42 countries are investing in VoLTE deployments, studies or trials.
