BT Updates Cloud Backup Service With Chromecast Support

BT has updated its cloud backup and storage service with support for Google Chromecast and offline file support for music and documents.

BT Cloud is included in every consumer broadband bundle, with users afforded capacities of either 5GB or 50GB depending on their package, an allocation which can be supplemented for a fee.

The new application is available on iOS, Android, PC Mac and Windows, with BT emphasising the benefits of backing up content in case a phone is lost or stolen and the additional storage BT Cloud can provide if a smartphone or tablet’s memory capacity is limited.

Users can edit documents, watch videos and listen to music even when a device is not connected to a wireless or cellular network by setting files to be available offline. Files uploaded or downloaded do not count towards broadband allowances.

BT says it’s not just “tech savvy” that need to back up their files, as a lost or stolen phone, tablet or laptop could lead to thousands of files being lost. The company promises the service is secure thanks to automatic virus scanning and stresses that data is protected by EU privacy laws.

“This new version of BT Cloud marks our second anniversary and we’ve listened to what our customers have been telling us to make BT Cloud even better,” said Andrew Kirkpatrick. “Now they can share photos and videos on a big screen thanks to Chromecast compatibility and we’ve also introduced a collections functionality that lets you organise your content from all your devices in one place more simply.”

BT Cloud forms part of the company’s strategy to bundle additional services, such as free BT Sport, with its broadband packages to fend off competition from the likes of Virgin Media, TalkTalk and Sky and foster customer loyalty. This also includes a return to the consumer mobile market after a ten year absence with “aggressively priced” 4G offers.
