Public Protection in the Digital Age: The Draft Communications Data Bill

Criminals are increasingly utilising a vast range of communications platforms and devices to commit offences. Under existing laws, however, many police investigations are hampered by difficulties in obtaining crucial communications data since many service providers are under no obligation to collect and store user data.

Seeking to address the inadequate legislative framework, the government published the Draft Communications Data Bill on 14th June 2012, setting out vital powers to help catch criminals, save lives and protect children.

This timely symposium provides an early opportunity to examine the draft Bill, discuss the latest government thinking on crime reduction and policing in the information age and explore how the balance can be struck between protecting the public and safeguarding civil liberties.
