Shred Easy Destroys Your Hard-Drives On Site

Document and data destruction specialists Shred Easy has launched a mobile hard disk drive (HDD) destruction service, where a specialist vehicle will be dispatched to a customer site and destroy all HDDs.

Shred Easy has been doing hard disk destuction at four BT data centres for a while, but has opted to provide a mobile service for all sized businesses due to increased customer concerns over company data being found on old IT equipment.

“We have been doing the hard disk drive destruction service for six months now at BT data centres,” said Anusree Saha, Marketing Manager at Shred Easy. “But more and more companies are now interested in the onsite destruction service, following reports of company data being found on old hard drives being sold on eBay.”

“We operate a high spec secure, onsite shredding vehicle,” she told eWEEK Europe. “Hard disks are completely destroyed into tiny particles, so there is no way anyone could recover sensitive data, unlike crushing.” The waste material is then recycled.

Saha said that Shred Easy currently operates a fleet of 31 shredding vehicle which do onsite document shredding. She was unable to say how many of these vehicles offer the hard disk shredding service.

Pricing depends on the customers requirements, she said.

The advantage of the service is that can securely audit and then destroy obsolete hard drives on site, without company data leaving the customer’s premises. All hard drives to be destroyed are electronically recorded using a bespoke barcode scanning process which records all the drives’ unique serial numbers.

When each hard drive is catalogued and saved electronically, the customer is issued with the Hard Disk Drive Destruction Certificate. Shred Easy operatives then transfer the audited hard drives to the waiting collection/shredding vehicle. Hard drives are fed into the high capacity shredding machine where the material is destroyed to BSIA standards.

Once the secure destruction process has been completed, the customer is issued with a referenced Certificate of Destruction, providing them with a complete audit trail and confirming their compliance under the Data Protection Act.

Shred Easy is not the first company in the UK offering this service. Back in June, DiskShred announced a mobile disk shredding service that would come to a customer’s site and destroy old hard disks.
