Mobile World Congress: Summary of Day 2

The second day of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) has brought all sorts of news, with industry companies inundating visitors with product launches and presentations.

Nokiaand Qualcomm, for starters, announced an agreement to work together in the development of mobile devices based on Symbian. The first mobiles generated in the framework of this agreement will be released on the US market only in the first instance, and will use third generation networks (3G).

Finnish manufacturer Nokia also told the market about a new deal they have made with Skypeto promote VoIP telephony from their terminals over 3G and WLAN networks. This new feature will be available in Nseries mobiles as from the third quarter of 2009.

Another much-discussed story was the relationship established between Nvidiaand Android, the open source operating system that is promoted by Google. Nvidia’s intention is to ensure that their Tegra processor is incorporated into Android-based devices.

Vodafone also chose Tuesday to present their new mobiles based on Android. Vodafone’s HTC Magic will automatically establish an Internet connection to confirm and update users’ details and download email.

Continuing with the smartphone market, Acer also confirmed its firm intention to compete in this arena after its adquisition of E-Ten Information System, by launching its new models M900, F900, X960 and DX900.

Finally, Yahoo! suprised the industry by presenting a new service that allows users to connect to Internet from a mobile using only one access point.
