Amazon Teams Up With Morrisons For Home Food Delivery

UK consumers will soon be able to get their weekly food shop delivered by Amazon after the online retail giant announced a new partnership with supermarket Morrisons.

The partnership will go live in the next few months, giving Amazon Prime Now and Amazon Pantry customers access to ‘hundreds’ of Morrisons products in the company’s fresh, frozen and ‘ambient’ ranges.

Morrisons, the UK’s fourth largest supermarket, says that the deal will allow it to grow its online business across the country – the retailer is also strengthening an existing relationship with Ocado.

Fresh food

Amazon has been slowly ramping up its fresh food and grocery delivery offerings in recent months as the company looks to extend its reach away from its traditionally strong retail areas.

Amazon Pantry, which offers more than 4,000 everyday essential items from beer to pet food, delivered directly to the customer’s door, launched in the UK back in November following a successful launch in the US 18 months ago.

“Today’s agreement is built on Morrisons unique strengths as a food maker,” said David Potts, Morrisons chief executive, “The combination of our fresh food expertise with Amazon’s online and logistics capabilities is compelling.

“This is a low risk and capital light wholesale supply arrangement that demonstrates the opportunity we have to become a broader business. We look forward to working with Amazon to develop and grow this partnership over the coming months.”

The launch also marks another stage in Amazon’s expansion across Europe, as the company said earlier this year that it will create “thousands” of new jobs on the continent, including a reported 2,500 in the UK, during 2016 as it looks to ramp up the development and rollout of new delivery methods, including its drone-based Prime Air delivery service.
