HTC is set to reveal its first wearable device at this year’s Mobile World Congress event, reports have claimed.
The company, which is also rumoured to be unveiling its next flagship mobile device, the One M9, at the show, will launch the smartwatch device in association with sportswear brand Under Armour.
According to Bloomberg, both devices will appear around the time of Mobile World Congress, which is being held in Barcelona in the first week of March.
HTC and Under Armour first announced their partnership at CES earlier this month, revealing that they would be working on, “a series of products” to work seamlessly with UA Record, the latter’s newly-developed fitness app.
HTC told Bloomberg that it doesn’t comment on unreleased products; however sources speaking to Pocket-Lint confirmed that the smartwatch would be released in Barcelona. HTC will be providing its own integrated hardware, the source said, although it wasn’t able to confirm specific details such as the software included or any hardware specifications.
HTC’s first wearable will need to be something special in order to have an effect on the increasingly-crowded smartwatch market. Recent research from analyst firm Juniper Research predicted that the number of smartwatches worldwide is expected to pass 100 million within the next five years, as the range of devices on the market increases dramatically.
Currently, 2.8 million people in the UK own a wearable, according to YouGov figures, with that figure predicted to rise to 6.1 million in a year’s time as the adoption rate rises from 6 percent to 13 percent.
