Equinix’s Flagship Asia Pacific Data Centre Goes Green

Equinix’s International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in Singapore has been awarded a ‘green’ certification for its energy efficient design and management.

The flagship facility is the largest in the Asia Pacific, and the company’s third in Singapore.

Opened in March, the 7-storey building includes a number of energy efficiency measures, such as solar energy provision to power non-essential operations, and a hot air/cold air aisle designed to enhance cooling efficiency by separating equipment exhaust heat from cooling air circulation.

Green Mark

The building was awarded the BCA-IDA platinum Green Mark certification.

Mark Simpson, regional director for hurleypalmerflatt, the company which built the Equinix data centre, said: “We are very proud to have made a major contribution to Equinix’s latest and largest project in Singapore, which has already been recognised for its outstanding energy efficiency performance.”

The Equinix data centre provides 35,000 square metres of colo space, and hosts 5,000 cabinets. SG3 also touts security fencing, blast resistant concrete walls, multiple checkpoints, perimeter security, hundreds of CCTV cameras, and 24/7-onsite security provided by trained staff, although there was no mention of what specific training the staff have.

“SG3 marks the completion of our very latest mission critical engineering project in Asia-Pacific, and our first with Equinix,” said Simpson.

Australian data centre

Also in March, Equinix opened its Australian IBM data centre in Australia. The data centre is located in Melbourne and supports the “strong demand” seen in the area for data centre services.

The strategic move by Equinix into Australia’s enterprise scene saw an initial investment of $60 million, and is claimed to be in line with the steady growth of the company’s global interconnection platform, in which Equinix has invested more than US$7.5 billion over the last 15 years.

Equinix Australia’s MD, Jeremy Deutsch, said in a press release: “By opening ME1, our first International Business Exchange in Melbourne, this city’s businesses can now choose more than just state-of-the-art carrier-neutral colocation space and carrier-dense interconnections.
