CES 2015 – Sony Reveals Next-Generation Smartwatch And Running Headset

Sony has introduced a range of new wearable products at CES 2015, including its latest smartwatch and a prototype headset-style device optimised for running.

The company took to the stage in Las Vegas to reveal the SmartWatch 3, the third generation of its wearable device built of stainless steel.

It features a 1.6” 320×320 TFT LCD Transflective display which permits visibility even in bright sunlight, charging via a standard microUSB port, and is IP68 rated, meaning it will give protection from shallow water for up to 30 minutes.

Available from next month, the SmartWatch 3 is powered by a quad ARM A7 1.2Ghz processor, 512MB of RAM and comes with 4GB of eMMC storage.

It runs Android Wear, meaning functions such as voice activation, active notifications and fitness tracking are all included as part of their device’s software. A compass, GPS, gyro and accelerometer are also included, meaning there is plenty of scope for app developers to play with.

Away from smartwatches, Sony also revealed Smart B-Trainer (pictured left) – a new multi-sensor, waterproof headset prototype designed for optimising performance and providing real time insight on the running track.

The current prototype features inbuilt memory – and will provide voice coaching, as well as music playback, intelligently suggesting the most suitable soundtrack to accompany a runner during a workout.

“Our approach to smart, wearable technology is based on the fundamentals of building depth and variety in user experiences, and providing choice with beautiful, functional products,” said Kaz Tajima, senior vice president, head of UX creative design and planning at Sony Mobile Communications.

Sony announced an software development kit for wearable apps last month, and also looked to show off the first products at CES. This included new applications for its current SmartEyeglass Developer Edition prototype, but also a new conceptual style, SmartEyeglass Attach! – a single lens display module for attaching to regular glasses, allowing developers to create applications for sport and performance.
