Medium Businesses Leading In Flash Adoption

Small and medium businesses in the UK are leading the way in flash storage adoption, according to a new report.

Almost two thirds of medium businesses in the UK have already adopted flash storage technologies, claims research from NetApp, with one in five smaller businesses planning to adopt flash in the next 12 months.

Flash adoption

NetApp surveyed 1,002 IT decision makers in the UK in May, and found that while enterprises agree that flash storage is necessary for data storage, it’s larger companies that are lagging behind in adoption.

Just over half of large enterprises have adopted flash already, just ahead of small businesses at 53 percent.

Overall, 57 percent of respondents said that their companies are supported by flash.

Laurence James, NEMEA Products, Alliances and Solutions Manager at NetApp said: “The perceived barriers to Flash adoption are falling down as small and medium sized businesses are realising the benefits of high performance and consistency across their enterprise applications.

“Our research shows that IT decision makers understand the business value of Flash.”

But a similar survey conducted in May by flash vendor Kaminario found that the UK is behind the global curve of flash adoption, mainly due to cost.

The survey found British businesses think that the falling cost of flash storage is just as important as its performance benefits.

Due to this importance placed on getting flash cheaper, the UK has a slower flash adoption rate in its data centres compared to more cash-spanking countries such as France and the US.
