Nexenta, which provides direct-attached, software-defined storage, has launched a block-and-object storage system for petabyte-scale cluster pools.
Optimised for OpenStack clouds, the platform is called NexentaEdge and was unveiled at this year’s OpenStack Summit in Vancouver, Canada.
Thomas Cornely, chief product officer at Nexenta, called the service disruptive. He said: “OpenStack clouds in particular require both high performance block services and extremely scalable object repositories. NexentaEdge is unique in its ability to concurrently meet these requirements and further drive down storage costs with inline deduplication and compression of all data at any scale.”
Key features of NexentaEdge include ‘low latency’ iSCSI Block and high performance Swift and S3 Object Services, a ground-up design delivering ‘best in class’ performance for small random I/O generated by virtual machine boot images in OpenStack Clouds, and the ability to scale storage capacity and performance (I/O per second or throughput) independently of each other, supporting all HDD, hybrid and all SSD configurations.
“Open Source-driven Software Defined Storage is driving a new style of IT in the enterprise,” said Simon Robinson, research vice president at 451 Research. “While scale-out object storage holds significant promise as a foundational technology for this new era, adoption is still nascent. NexentaEdge, with its key value-driven architecture, ability to handle a variety of workloads, and replicast technology to ensure efficiency and redundancy, is a potential game-changer. NexentaEdge will have a significant impact on an organisation’s ability to transform their storage infrastructure, lower TCO and make the shift to the Software-Defined Data Centre.”
NexentaEdge’s will cost from $0.15/GB to less than $0.10/GB at capacity plus maintenance and support.
