Dell Releases PowerEdge R930 Server

Dell has launched its PowerEdge R930 server that it hopes will scoop up users of enterprise applications that use in-memory databases, CRM and ERP.

“Once the domain of UNIX systems, these enterprise applications are increasingly shifting to x86 platforms for increased innovation, additional capabilities and lower total cost of ownership,” said Dell.

Dell claims the R930 can maximise application performance with 22 percent better performance than its previous four-socket server and reduce configuration time by up to 99 percent and reduce time on manual inventory by up to 91 percent.

The Austin, Texas based firm also says the new server can flexibly scale workloads by bringing storage closer to compute and leveraging industry-leading storage scalability and a large memory footprint.

Dan Harrington, a 451 Research analyst, said whilst Dell’s hardware specs are fine for most enterprises, it’s Dell’s ecosystem approach that is most interesting.

“Customers are increasingly looking to purpose-built appliances that can be deployed quickly and reliably for applications such as SAP HANA,” he said. “Dell’s high end x86 portfolio not only provides the solid hardware platform for this, but also the software and services ecosystem required to manage complex scenarios such as the ongoing industry migration from UNIX to Linux.”

As well as the R930 rack server, Dell has also updated its PowerEdge VRTX and PowerEdge M1000e converged platforms, and introduced the PowerEdge FC830 and the PowerEdge M830 blade server as part of Dell’s 13th generation of PowerEdge servers.
