Nokia Eyes Data Centre Wins With Telco Cloud Tools

Nokia has entered the race to win cloud data centre customers with the release of tools that specifically benefit mobile carriers.

The Finnish firm has announced its ‘AirFrame Data Centre Solution’, and said it will help telcos meet the scalability and demand required for today’s mobile network use.

Specifically, the AirFrame release consists of servers and switches that include Nokia Networks own tools that claim to make it more efficient than rival platforms in running demanding mobile virtual network functions (VNFs).

IT-telco convergence

Nokia said that release is to plug a gap the firm sees in IT-telco convergence. “Nokia is changing the game in telco cloud,” said Marc Rouanne, vice president of mobile broadband at Nokia Networks. “We are taking on the IT-telco convergence with a new solution to challenge the traditional IT approach of the data centre.”

The AirFrame tool is, naturally, being touted as 5G ready, a key marketing point that may give the solution an edge over some of Nokia’s new rivals.

“From the beginning, Nokia Networks has been a forerunner in telco cloud innovation,” said Rouanne. “This newest solution brings telcos carrier-grade high availability, security-focused reliability as well as low latency.”

The solution uses Intel technology, we well as a mix of OpenStack and VMware software. Sandra Rivera, vice president at Intel’s Network Platforms Group, said that Intel is pleased with  Nokia’s decision to provide a data centre solution for the telco cloud environment.

“We believe that combining Intel’s leading processors and virtualisation technologies with Nokia Networks’ deep knowledge of the telecommunications market will accelerate adoption for cloud technologies deployed by leading operators worldwide,” said Rivera.
