Cisco has been a major player in the world of networks since it was formed 30 years ago as a university network operation.
Its technology, strengthened through a number of smart acquisitions over the course of three decades, has helped it secure a dominant share of the market for switches and routers.
More recently it has tried its hand at analytics and its current focus is on providing networks that can power the Internet of Things (IoT), as well as Software Defined Networks (SDN).
There have been a few mistakes over the years, most notably its push for the consumer market with Linksys, and the company is facing strong competition from the likes of Huawei.
