VMware releases host of updates to unified hybrid cloud platforms and continues support for containers and Google DNS

VMware, as the dust is barely settling from the Dell buyout of EMC, has rushed through a wave of updates to its unified hybrid cloud platform.

The company introduced new updates to VMware vCloud Air and vCloud Air Network at this year’s European VMworld in Barcelona.

Google’s Cloud DNS will also be the next Google Cloud platform service available on vCloud Air.

VMware has also chosen to show its continued support for the container trend by expanding its support for vSphere Integrated Containers.

Right answer?

“Enterprises are looking to move their applications to the cloud, and increasingly see a hybrid strategy to cloud adoption as the right answer,” said Bill Fathers, executive vice presiden, VMware.

“VMware’s approach is about empowering organisations to securely build, run and deliver any application across any environment. Our public cloud, vCloud Air, and global service provider ecosystem, vCloud Air Network, form the core components of our Unified Hybrid Cloud and remove that compromise from consideration.”

vmwareContainers will be playing an increasingly important role in securely delivering those applications.

With Vmware’s support for containers, the company said it will enable IT teams to back any application, obviously including containerised applications, on a common infrastructure running on vCloud Air.

These updates, alongside analytics features on vCloud Air Monitoring Insight and an Identity Access Management update, are all part of Vmware’s hybrid cloud tour de force.

IDC analyst Melanie Posey said that VMware’s unified hybrid cloud platformhelps businesses remain competitive through this transformative IT period.”

VMware pinned the releases together with the announcement of vCloud Director 8, aiming to help customers build differentiated cloud services that are hybrid ready. The release includes support for vSphere 6 and VMware NSX 6.1.4, the addition of organisation Virtual Data Centre (vDC) templates, VMware vSphere vApp enhancements and OAuth Support for Identity Sources.

Vmware’s vCloud Director 8 is available immediately. VCloud Air Monitoring Insight and Enhanced Identity Access Management are expected to be generally available for VMware vCloud Air Virtual Private Cloud in Q4 2015. Google Cloud DNS on vCloud Air is expected to be generally available in the first half 2016, and expanded support for vSphere Integrated Containers is due in 2016 also.
