Open-sourcerer Red Hat has teamed up with NEC Corporation to start work on NFV (network functions virtualisation) features for Red Hat’s Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform.
NFV capability on Red Hat’s platform will allow communication service providers to “deliver customer-facing services more easily and faster,” said Red Hat.
In December last year, there was a very similar announcement from Red Hat they it had teamed up with Huawei to partner on NFV.
Red Hat and NEC have been working with each other for more than 10 years now, but have more recently started to focus on NFV system integration with OpenStack.
These efforts are being contributed to the upstream OpenStack community, to enable Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform to crown themselves as a leading cloud platform for NFV.
Several of the NFV features resulting directly from this collaboration were included in the OpenStack Juno release, or are planned for the forthcoming OpenStack Kilo release.
SVP of indrastructure for Red Hat, Tim Yeaton, said that NFV has “tremendous potential” in OpenStack, and the technology will radically change the way CSPs deliver solutions to their
He said: “NEC has long appreciated the power of ‘open’, and has always been an excellent partner. Through this expanded collaboration, Red Hat is excited to help meet CSP interest in NFV and open source cloud platforms – and more specifically, OpenStack, as they look for solutions to drive costs down and deliver new high value offerings.”
Atsuo Kawamura, senior vice president, NEC Corporation, said: “NEC has commercially delivered SDN/NFV solutions, including vEPC and vCPE, and will continue driving innovation with broader virtualised network functions that promote greater agility, stability and security of services as well as new revenue creation while enabling a wide range of customers to significantly reduce the total cost of ownership.”
