Intel And Rackspace Are Planning An OpenStack ‘Innovation Centre’

An OpenStack-dedicated ‘innovation centre’ has been planned by Rackspace and Intel to try and heighten interest in advancing OpenStack code.

According to the companies, the mission goal is this:Accelerate the development of enterprise capabilities and significantly add to the number of developers contributing to upstream OpenStack code.”

1,000 node clusters

This new agreement from Rackspace and Intel not only includes the Innovation Centre, which will be located at Rackspace’s Texas headquarters, but will also see Rackspace and Intel build and make available to the OpenStack community two 1,000 node clusters to support advanced, large-scale testing of OpenStack. The companies anticipate having the clusters available for community use within the next six months.

“This announcement demonstrates our continued support and commitment to open source projects,” said Jason Waxman, vice president of Cloud Platforms Group at Intel. “Our ongoing collaboration with Rackspace and the OpenStack community represents an ideal opportunity to accelerate the enterprise appeal of OpenStack.”

The news comes as Intel unveils another cloud push, an initiative dubbed ‘Cloud for All’ that will work on making public, private and hybrid deployments easier. Intel will run through a series of investments and collaborations in the cloud software ecosystem, optimising software defined infrastructure (SDI) platforms to deliver clouds across a range of workloads by taking full advantage of Intel platform capabilities and attempting to align the industry when it comes to open industry standards.

“The cloud has been critical to the digital services economy and has enabled tremendous innovation and business growth, but broad enterprise adoption is not happening fast enough,” said Diane Bryant, senior vice president of Intel’s Data Centre Group. “We believe that through this initiative we will enable our customers to realise the benefits and innovations gained from the latest cloud computing technologies.”
