EMC Sets Sights On Irish Data Centre Expansion

EMC is set to expand its Irish footprint by building a new data centre at its Ovens plant in County Cork.

Cloud and IT infrastructure provider EMC, which is one of Ireland’s top employers alongside Apple and Intel, will apply to Cork Country Council for planning permission to expand its facilities, which also includes new offices and a car park.

Irish operation

The expansion could take up to ten years if planning permission is approved, but EMC VP Bob Savage said that the operation is the centre of the firm’s global growth plans.

“The Irish operation continues to perform well and contributes significantly to the global EMC business.

“As we continue to innovate and advance new and exciting technologies, it is important that we are well-positioned to accommodate further business growth here in a timely manner.

“Ireland’s economic recovery is well under way and the country has made significant advances in positioning itself among its EU counterparts as a tech hub.”

The move is expected to produce between 200 and 500 jobs for the area. Ireland’s Defence Minister Simon Coveney said that the news was “tremendous” and that it was proof that Ireland is “a hugely attractive location for investment”.
