Amazon Enters Internet Of Things Market With AWS IoT

Amazon Web Services has entered the Internet of Things market with its own IoT platform – called Amazon IoT.

The service will allow users to build IoT applications, as well as collect data from IoT sensors. The product was unveiled by Amazon CTO Werner Vogels at this year’s re:Invent annual AWS conference in Las Vegas.

Interact

AWS IoT is effectively a managed cloud platform that will let devices interact with cloud apps and other devices.

“AWS IoT can support billions of devices and trillions of messages,” said Amazon. The platform can also process and route the messages to AWS endpoints.

Here’s how the platform will authenticate connections between sensors, a device and an application

“With AWS IoT, your applications can keep track of and communicate with all your devices, all the time, even when they aren’t connected,” said Amazon.

AWS IoT will integrate with other Amazon services such as Lambda, Kinesis, Amazon S3, Machine Learning, and Amazon DynamoDB.

The announcement comes a week after Microsoft made its Internet of Things platform available at its AzureCon conference. The platform can perform data collection functions and predictive maintenance.

The suite integrates with a customer’s existing processes, devices and systems to help build and scale IoT projects across their business using preconfigured solutions.

“We live in a connected world, and the intelligent cloud is powering it all,” said Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise division.

“As data and devices continue to proliferate, there is vast opportunity for businesses to tap into their data to make their applications more intelligent.
