Box Adds 100,000 Students And Staff At Five UK Universities

Box says platform can help students share content and work together on assignments

Box has added a number of universities to its cloud collaboration platform, bringing 100,000 more staff and students to its ecosystem.

The company already counts Lancaster University, the University of Dundee and the University of Stirling among its customers, and has now secured Imperial College London, University of Sussex, Aston University, Kingston University and London Metropolitan University.

“Box has helped us transform the way our staff and academic community collect, manage and collaborate on research data internally and with external collaborators,” said Mike Russell, CIO at Imperial College London.

“The security and information management features mean that researchers no longer have to worry about how their data is stored and backed up. The integration capabilities will allow further exploitation of the large amounts of data now stored in Box.”

“We have rolled out Box to all staff at the University of Sussex and it is now an integral part of the working environment,” added Paul Davies, director of IT services at the University of Sussex.

“It is the de facto platform for file sharing, collaboration and accessing information remotely. Research projects and teams are also making increasingly more use of the service. Box is helping us to transform the way we engage with content and information at the university.”

Box has worked to make its product as appealing to individual industries as possible and has launched Box for Education. It claims users at the universities will be able to access course materials more easily and work together on research projects.

“The education sector in Europe is in the middle of a monumental shift away from traditional IT systems,” said David Benjamin, Box’s general manager for EMEA.

“We’re seeing universities, alongside global businesses, moving to cloud technologies to power new and more productive ways of working. British universities choosing Box is a great example of the Higher Education sector harnessing the power of cloud to improve collaboration.”

Box refreshed its user interface last year and has worked to attain EU Binding Corporate Rules that govern the transfer of data between the US and the European Union. UK customers can now store their data in IBM’s UK data centres, boosting performance and allowing firms in regulated industries to move some content to the cloud.
