BMC Software is expanding its business service management capabilities by buying startup Tideway Systems.
Through the deal, announced on 19 Oct, BMC will acquire Tideway’s IT discovery offerings, important capabilities for businesses undergoing such projects as data centre consolidation and virtualisation.
No financial details of the deal were released. BMC officials expect the deal to close within a week.
Tideway brings its Foundation software to the deal. The product offers businesses a single view of their infrastructure, mapping business applications to their physical and virtual systems. The software is designed to let IT administrators quickly see how the infrastructure supports the business, according to Tideway.
Adding that IT discovery capability to BMC’s business service management offerings is key, according to Dev Ittycheria, president of enterprise service management at BMC.
“Given the nature of today’s highly complex and rapidly evolving computing environments, having deep visibility and clear understanding of the critical business services and their associated relationships to specific IT resources is fundamental to improving service quality, minimising risk and reducing IT costs,” Ittycheria said in a statement.
BMC officials plan to combine the Tideway product with their own Atrium Discovery and Dependency Mapping solution, BMC will deliver unmatched visibility.
Tideway brings a large open library of predefined IT configuration discovery patterns, which give IT administrators the ability to quickly identify and map their software and hardware assets.
Tideway is no stranger to BMC, having been a part of BMC’s Technology Alliance Partner program. Through the program, Tideway has integrated its Foundation software with BMC’s Atrium Configuration Management Database.
