The Gartner Magic Quadrant reports are one of the de-facto evaluations in measuring vendor offerings. The industry and its various segments attach a high premium to the results. Enterprises able to enter any of the squares must demonstrate a completeness of vision and ability to execute, with the top ranking reserved for those able to perform exceptionally well at both. Huawei has consistently improved its position in many categories, having the most complete portfolio of any vendor. Adding to its long list of recognitions from internationally renowned firms, the technological conglomerate, with its FusionInsight platform, recently broke into the Niche Players square in the Magic Quadrant for Data Management Solutions for Analytics (DMSA) released in February 2017.

Huawei enters Niche Players square in Gartner Magic Quadrants – DMSA

Gartner has previously recognized Huawei’s other offerings, including its servers, FusionCube appliance, storage offerings, networking devices, and other solutions that have all climbed in ranking. In 2016, the tech stalwart’s general-purpose arrays climbed to the Leaders Quadrant.

So, with such frequent appearance in the Gartner reports, is Huawei’s inclusion into the DMSA report even worthy of mention? Of course it is.

Huawei has proven itself reliable in hardware and now its software offerings are also making a name. Huawei is breaking down the thresholds in many high-end software component segments that many once thought would be held exclusively by Western-based vendors for many years to come. In just three years since launch, Huawei FusionInsight Big Data platform’s listing in the Magic Quadrant is nothing short of exceptional. Huawei has yet again proven that commitment and dedication pay off.

Open Cloud: The Wave of the Future

The Gartner Magic Quadrants – DMSA report mainly focuses on data management, processing, and analysis solutions including traditional data warehousing and the emerging Big Data solutions in cloud layouts, particularly in analysis processing (AP) cases, not so much on transaction processing (TP) cases.

In contrast to the weightings in the 2016 reports, the 2017 report has started to emphasize cloud-based solutions and analytic processing capabilities, moving away from the intent focus on relational databases using SQL. With the changes, the 2017 report was renamed the Magic Quadrant for Data Management Solutions for Analytics to replace the Magic Quadrant for Data Warehouse and Data Management.

Notice the changes for many players between the 2016 and 2017 report. Many positions changed and even once familiar faces disappeared as the new focuses and weights were applied to the data processing and analytics space. The traditional data warehousing applications are mature, which means breakthroughs are not as common as the importance is quickly shifting to logical data warehousing (LDW). Even IBM and SAP slid a bit in the new dynamics even though they are still in the Leaders part of the quad.

The cloud has become the de facto standard. Those that do not embrace it are doomed to obsolescence. Look at the jump AWS took into the Leaders square from the Challengers position, and its momentum is clearly building.

The cloud trend is not only in the DMSA sector, it extends to the entire IT industry. The struggle between data warehousing and the new logical data warehousing models is a contention between traditional commercial software and the emerging open source ecosystem. All fields are experiencing the revolution as innumerable start-ups dot the landscape. The same is true for data analysis and processing as this element is also moved to the cloud.

Built to run in the open source ecosystem, Huawei FusionInsight integrates Hadoop, massive-scale concurrent processing databases, and Big Data cloud services in one platform. The future-proof offering delivers total piece of mind in massive data processing system builds, helping enterprises tap into the value of their data to achieve business success.

Huawei has continued to demonstrate its commitment to open source, grounding its offerings in its precepts and becoming a champion of the effort while incessantly enhancing the big tent. In 2015 to 2016, Huawei was the third-ranked contributor to the Hadoop community, fourth-ranked in Spark, and the top-ranked IT equipment provider in the world. Also in 2016, Huawei donated its innovative CarbonData project to the Apache Software Foundation for continued development and adoption by the greater Big Data community. The innovative converged data storage solution is able to meet the needs of diverse use cases and query tens of billions of records within the seconds range.

“All Cloud” is a focus of Huawei, and FusionInsight is one centerpiece to that strategy that will have its on-cloud analysis and processing capabilities enhanced as the overarching blueprint is extended. Huawei is on the throttle and not letting up in its climb up the Gartner Magic Quadrant.

The Huge Potential of Huawei FusionInsight

Huawei is bound to advance up the Gartner scale if it keeps up its current pace of development with FusionInsight. The Gartner report had nothing but high praise for the offering, only voicing concerns over the short time the platform has been on the market and the moderate level of brand awareness in the category outside of China.

In terms of completeness of vision and ability to innovate, Gartner commented that Huawei is able to deliver specific models and service innovations to suit the particulars of industry customers. For example, the Huawei offering is able to meet the stringent requirements in real-time risk controls for credit card processors in the finance industry. Previously, only damage control could be performed after a holder’s card was stolen. Huawei developed an RTD risk-control technology able to move into preemptive controls instead of the passive post-event cleanups.

Huawei is showing it can take on just about any challenge. Its Big Data product strategy is a focused platform strategy with solid tech at the underlying layer and standardized interfaces at the upper layer so partners can further fit the offering with the rich services customers require, adding agility to business and enriching lives. As part of this strategy, Huawei actively promotes the buildup of the Big Data ecosystem. In 2014, Huawei established a big data security alliance and built a joint lab with many ISVs from the finance industry. Together, members are developing innovative solutions for the future.

Huawei is constantly expanding the Hadoop capabilities of its solutions, including compatibilities with SQL-on-Hadoop search engines, massively parallel processing databases, and streaming image analysis utilities with enhanced scheduling programs and improvements to the distributed storage layer.

In terms of customer loyalty, Gartner reported that all of the Huawei customers surveyed planned to buy additional software licenses, products, or functions within the next 12 months. In addition, 90% of them also consider FusionInsight to be a standard.

In terms of customer base, FusionInsight commands a rather large and varied mix. The platform has been deployed in more than 30 countries and regions such as China, Thailand, the Philippines, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Argentina for customers in banking, insurance, securities, telecom, government, transportation, education, meteorology, healthcare, electricity, energy, and manufacturing sectors. The long client list of Fortune 500s includes the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Construction Bank of China, Bank of Communications, China Ping An Group, China Merchants Bank, Postal Savings Bank, Pacific Insurance, China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, Saudi Telecom, Emirates Telecommunications Corporation, and China Petroleum.

Huawei is poised to extend market penetration of the platform further out into Europe and the Americas from its strong footholds in the Asian and China markets. Gartner recognizes Huawei as a global company with good performance in the server, storage, and network spaces. With the company’s continued strategic investments in Big Data platforms, FusionInsight is bound jump up in position in the Gartner Magic Quadrant report in the future.
